A Day at Up On Top
KidzLit
The goal of KidzLit is to bring good books to life and help
the kids enjoy reading.
Together the children, staff and volunteers read a range of
children’s literature featuring stories and characters from
diverse cultures and backgrounds. The books highlight the
positive values such as respect, kindness and responsibility.
The teacher reads the book and does exciting activities such as
art, drama, music, writing and games that give the children a
chance to connect the stories that they read.
Science
The Science Club brings an opportunity for the children to participate in fun science experiments every week.
Some of the activities include making their own sunscreen, creating flubber, making model volcanoes that really erupted, doing fun water experiments,
and making plastic. Each activity includes a lesson on science and how it is a part of their everyday world. This year, the focus of Science Club is Life Sciences,
including studying humans, animals, plants and how we are all connected.
Young Leaders
This class is designed to allow time for the 3rd –5th grade
students to be together and work on team-building, interpersonal
and social skills, self-esteem and creativity. The curriculum
comes from activities in the books such as Adventures in
Peacemaking. Students have written to pen pals in Florida and
learned how to knit. This helps them develop hand and eye
coordination skills and math skills. The students learn also
patience as they work on a long-term project. |
