Fun, laughter and planned activities fill the
days
The Up On Top After School and Summer Program includes homework support,
academic tutoring and enrichment, literacy support, language arts and
creative activities such as enrichment workshops in poetry, literacy, drama
and music. The children have safe, free play and field trips.
Assessing Student Achievements
The staff measure student achievement by assessing each
child at the beginning and end of the school year, and they discuss the
child’s performance with the school teachers on a daily basis. The director
works closely with the parents and teachers to ensure each child’s needs are
met. The staff use the Desired Results for Children and Families
Programmatic Standards, an assessment tool developed by the Calif. Dept. of
Education. Also, the staff keep a folder on each child and review the
folders with the children’s parents or caretakers on a regular basis.
A Typical Day
At the Unitarian Universalist Church campus, teachers
and trained volunteers meet the children at the nearby
Tenderloin Neighborhood Elementary School after school,
and walk five blocks up the hill to Up On Top. Other
kids arrive by a mini-bus. After playing outside, the
children go inside for a nutritious snack and either
read on their own or a volunteer reads with them. One of
Up On Top’s main goals is fostering in each child a love
for reading and books. At the Achievers
Academy, kids go the designated classroom after classes
are over. The program for both campuses is the same.
After reading time, the children participate in
brainpower hour where the teachers and volunteers assist
the children with their homework. They play fun games to
increase their academic skills. Following brainpower
hour, the children divide into groups for creative
activities.
